How to Calculate the Unit Weight of a Refractory Brick from Its Dimensions
Calculating refractory brick unit weight (volume × density) using the T-3 standard brick, with typical weights for fireclay and high-alumina grades.
The weight of a refractory brick can be calculated from its density and dimensions. Take the T-3 refractory brick, for example, which measures 230×114×65 mm.
Formula for refractory brick weight: m = ρV (mass = volume × density)
Calculation example:
1. Using an SK-32 refractory brick in the T-3 straight standard shape, calculate the unit weight of the SK-32 brick:
The T-3 straight standard brick measures 230 mm × 114 mm × 65 mm, and the bulk density of SK-32 is 2.05 g/cm³.
Volume = 23 × 11.4 × 6.5 = 1704.3 cm³
Unit weight = 1704.3 × 2.05 = 3493.8 g = 3.49 kg
So one T-3 SK-32 refractory brick weighs 3.49 kg, and one T-3 grade-55 high-alumina brick weighs 3.9–4.1 kg. Weights vary with material and shape; for shaped or special-shaped bricks, an average value can be used.
Unit weights of standard-size refractory bricks
Fireclay brick: bulk density 2.2 g/cm³; T-3 brick weight 3.75 kg
LZ-48 high-alumina brick: bulk density 2.2–2.3 g/cm³; T-3 brick weight 3.75–3.9 kg
LZ-55 high-alumina brick: bulk density 2.3–2.4 g/cm³; T-3 brick weight 3.9–4.1 kg
LZ-65 high-alumina brick: bulk density 2.4–2.55 g/cm³; T-3 brick weight 4.1–4.35 kg
LZ-75 high-alumina brick: bulk density 2.55–2.7 g/cm³; T-3 brick weight 4.35–4.6 kg
Special high-alumina brick: bulk density generally above 2.7 g/cm³; T-3 brick weight 4.6–4.9 kg.
